Pizza Storico – Trattoria Verdi

Whoever asks me where the original pizza is, I will receive the same answer: Italy. Well, the history of this dish is far removed than seems at first glance. Since antiquity, both Romans and Greeks, Israelis, Babylonians, and Egyptians cooked something very similar to today’s focaccia. We can, therefore, consider pizza to date, in a primitive form, of course, ever since.

To get to the shape we know, pizza will go a long way, culminating, obviously, on the sunny shores of southern Italy. Thus, in the sixteenth century, poor people in Naples found an affordable way to feed themselves on a meal made from wheat flour dough, olive oil, tomatoes, cheese and herbs. That’s how the first pizza appeared.
